Sumer-The earliest- known civilization in the fertile crescent.
Fertile crescent-Area of fertile land in the middle east.
Mesopotamia-Means "Land Between the Rivers"
Tigris and the Euphrates river-Rivers that surround Mesopotamia.
Irrigation-Moving water to grow food.
City-state - Isolated cities that function like small countries.
Ziggurat-Means "mountain of god"
Artisans-Skilled workers that made useful products.
Cuneiform-First form of writing; uses wedge-shaped symbols.
Scribes-Record keepers; those who could write.
Epic of Gilgamesh- The world's oldest known story; comes from Sumer.
Sargon-King of Akkadians; first to conquer all of Mesopotamia.
Empire-A group of many different lands under one ruler.
Babylon- City built by Hammurabi.
Hammurabi-King of Babylonian Empire; famous for his law codes.
Hammurabi's Code- First organized and written code that all could see.
EQ)What was Mesopotamia like????
Mesopotamia was a place that was between the Tigris and Euphrates river. Which is what Mesopotamia means "between the rivers". Mesopotamia was in a place called the fertile Crescent. The fertile crescent was a land with very fertile soil that was great for farming. The soil was made fertile by flooding that brought lots of mud. The type of writing that the people of Mesopotamia used was cuneiform made of wedge shaped symbols. They also developed arts and religions. One Ruler during this period was Hammurabi who made the Hammurabi code. Hammurabi's code was a set of laws for everyone to see.
How will the past help effect my future?
It will help effect my future because I have learned that you have to have laws to make your school,business, and government effective. Thats what Hammurabi discovered that he had to do with his empire.Hammurabi's codes helped his empire which I thought makes a government,business,exc. successful.
